Chicken Meat Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European chicken meat market totaled $X in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia (X tons) remains the largest chicken meat producing country in Eastern Europe, accounting for 47% of total volume. Moreover, chicken meat production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ukraine (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Russia totaled +3.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (+4.5% per year) and Ukraine (+2.3% per year).

The average chicken meat yield rose slightly to X kg per head in 2021, picking up by 1.6% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 2.6%. Over the period under review, the chicken meat yield hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

For the tenth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of chicken meat, which increased by 1.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chicken meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 49% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together constituting a 43% share of total exports. Romania (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chicken meat exports from Poland stood at +14.5%. At the same time, Russia (+30.4%), Ukraine (+21.2%), Belarus (+6.8%) and Hungary (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012-2021. Lithuania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Romania (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ukraine (+9.2 p.p.), Poland (+8.5 p.p.) and Russia (+8.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Lithuania (-2.6 p.p.), Hungary (-3.6 p.p.), Belarus (-4.1 p.p.) and Romania (-6.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest chicken meat supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +13.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+19.1% per year) and Russia (+35.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Romania ($X per ton) and Lithuania ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas purchases of chicken meat decreased by -1.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons), distantly followed by Ukraine (X tons), Romania (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the key importers of chicken meat, together making up 84% of total imports. Latvia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicken meat in Eastern Europe, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -7.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (-1.4% per year) and Romania (+2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
