In 2022, the East European chocolate and confectionery market decreased by -5.6% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 6.1% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, after seven years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of chocolate and confectionery, when their volume decreased by -0.8% to X tons. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +38.7% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, chocolate and confectionery exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.7% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 16%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the major exporters of chocolate and confectionery, together making up 82% of total exports. The following exporters - Hungary (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) - each amounted to an 8.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +15.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest chocolate and confectionery supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 6.7% share.
In Poland, chocolate and confectionery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+3.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+2.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 6.9% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
After six years of growth, overseas purchases of chocolate and confectionery decreased by -2.9% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 11%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports contracted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 13%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the key importers of chocolate and confectionery in 2022, amounting to approx. 30% and 21% of total imports, respectively. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a 9.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (7.9%), Hungary (6.9%), Bulgaria (5.3%), Ukraine (4.9%) and Slovakia (4.9%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest chocolate and confectionery importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +9.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Slovakia ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
