The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 20%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -16.1% against 2020 indices. In 2022, Poland (X tons) represented the main exporter of cigarettes containing tobacco, achieving 57% of total exports. Lithuania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Romania (11%), the Czech Republic (9.8%) and Russia (5.3%). The following exporters - Ukraine (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - together made up 4.3% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Poland stood at +6.8%. At the same time, Lithuania (+9.6%), the Czech Republic (+3.4%) and Romania (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-5.2%), Russia (-5.5%) and Bulgaria (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+17 p.p.) and Lithuania (+5.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Russia saw its share reduced by -2%, -3.5%, -6.1% and -7.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest cigarettes containing tobacco supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 10% share.

In Poland, cigarettes containing tobacco exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lithuania (+12.2% per year) and Romania (+1.3% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -8.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) represented roughly 37% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Poland (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together generating a 54% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +7.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cigarettes containing tobacco importing markets in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Hungary ($X), together accounting for 49% of total imports. Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Latvia, Russia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Among the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +9.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 19%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
