The East European cigars and cigarillos market shrank to $X in 2022, declining by -9.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos production dropped remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 158%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos, when their volume decreased by -9.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 118% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 98%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Hungary represented the largest exporter of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2022. Poland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total exports. Ukraine (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Hungary increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+47.9%), Ukraine (+47.2%), Slovakia (+34.4%) and Latvia (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +47.9% from 2012-2022. Poland (+27 p.p.), Hungary (+18 p.p.), Slovakia (+7.1 p.p.) and Ukraine (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cigars and cigarillos supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Hungary ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together comprising 91% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +45.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 25%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Cigars And Cigarillos Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, supplies from abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos, namely Romania, Slovakia and Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Latvia (X tons), together committing a 19% share of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +43.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X), Romania ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 57% of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +23.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 13%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
