Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +32.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 46%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-0.1%).

In 2022, supplies from abroad of coal other than lingites increased by 81% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, coal other than lingite imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Poland was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 46% of total imports. Russia (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (9.3%), Slovakia (6.5%) and Ukraine (5.2%). Belarus (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +29.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coal other than lingites in Eastern Europe, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with an 11% share.

In Poland, coal other than lingite imports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+15.5% per year) and Ukraine (-7.8% per year).

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
