Coffee Extract Market Size in Eastern Europe

For the fourth year in a row, the East European coffee extract market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -4.7% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw a pronounced decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

For the fourth year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +81.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 18%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, coffee extract exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total exports in 2021. Hungary (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons). All these countries together took near 36% share of total exports. Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +49.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Hungary, Ukraine and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +38.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 6.9%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (-1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -0.1% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 8.1%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 4.2%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons), distantly followed by Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) were the main importers of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, together comprising 88% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 6.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
