Green Coffee Market Size in Eastern Europe

For the fourth year in a row, the East European green coffee market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6.8% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Green Coffee Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, green coffee production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, faced a sharp slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Estonia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of green coffee production, comprising approx. 98% of total volume. It was followed by Moldova (X tons), with a 1.7% share of total production.

In Estonia, green coffee production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the amount of coffee (green) exported in Eastern Europe skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 70% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Estonia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total exports in 2022. Slovakia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Lithuania (11%), Latvia (11%) and Russia (9.6%). Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +44.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green coffee supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Estonia ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together accounting for 58% of total exports. Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Among the main exporting countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +42.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of coffee (green) decreased by -4% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 27%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, green coffee imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the key importer of coffee (green), comprising 48% of total imports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 28% share, followed by Bulgaria (6%) and Ukraine (5.2%). The following importers - Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each recorded an 8.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 75% of total imports. The Czech Republic, Ukraine and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Among the main importing countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +11.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
