The Czech Republic represented the main exporter of clays for construction and industrial use in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Bulgaria (10%) and Poland (7.1%). The following exporters - Hungary (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) - together made up 6% of total exports.

Exports from the Czech Republic increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+25.3%), Poland (+7.8%), Hungary (+3.5%) and Bulgaria (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +25.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-25.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Czech Republic, Russia, Poland and Bulgaria increased by +22, +9.5, +3.8 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest clays for construction and industrial use supplying countries in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Hungary ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 84% of total exports. Russia, Bulgaria and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Russia, Romania and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belarus (-1.6%) and Hungary (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bulgaria and Poland increased by +6.5 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported clays for construction and industrial use in Eastern Europe, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 10% share.
