In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the East European cotton yarn market, when its value increased by 28% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the amount of cotton yarn exported in Eastern Europe skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 54% compared with the year before. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +60.5% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cotton yarn exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Poland (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together accounting for 88% of total export. The following exporters - Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - together made up 9.8% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belarus (with a CAGR of +45.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Bulgaria ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 66% of total exports. These countries were followed by Belarus, Russia, Romania and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 30%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +34.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, supplies from abroad of cotton yarn increased by 8.3% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Imports by Country
Russia was the largest importer of cotton yarn in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 68% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together achieving a 16% share of total imports. The following importers - Ukraine (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+8.8%), Bulgaria (+2.0%), Ukraine (+1.3%) and Poland (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Romania (-1.7%) and the Czech Republic (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+13 p.p.) and Belarus (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-2.1 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-4.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cotton yarn in Eastern Europe, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled +5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+0.6% per year) and the Czech Republic (-4.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
