In 2022, approx. X tons of cottonseed were exported in Eastern Europe; picking up by 227% on 2021 figures. In general, exports recorded prominent growth. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cottonseed exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 316% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 48% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together constituting a 48% share of total exports. Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +159.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) emerged as the largest cottonseed supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.6% share.

In Slovakia, cottonseed exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+118.2% per year) and Poland (+111.5% per year).

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 178% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, purchases abroad of cottonseed was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, imports saw a resilient expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cottonseed imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 154%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), committing a 6.4% share of total imports. Slovakia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into the Czech Republic increased at an average annual rate of +22.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+154.8%) and Slovakia (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +154.8% from 2012-2022. The Czech Republic (+59 p.p.), Romania (+6.4 p.p.) and Slovakia (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cottonseed in Eastern Europe, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports.

In the Czech Republic, cottonseed imports increased at an average annual rate of +25.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Slovakia (+19.8% per year) and Romania (+120.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -38.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 88%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
