Couscous Market Size in Eastern Europe

For the third consecutive year, the East European couscous market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6.9% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, couscous production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In 2021, the amount of couscous exported in Eastern Europe skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 249%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, couscous exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. In 2021, Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented the main exporter of couscous in Eastern Europe, generating 82% of total export. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), making up an 11% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +46.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 68% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

For the tenth year in a row, Eastern Europe recorded growth in supplies from abroad of couscous, which increased by 1.8% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 73%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, couscous imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of couscous, namely Russia, Ukraine, Poland and the Czech Republic, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), constituting a 7.7% share of total imports. Romania (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +53.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Russia ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Hungary, Romania and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +38.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
