Market Size for Marble And Travertine in Eastern Europe
The East European marble and travertine crude market rose rapidly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2014 to 2022, crude production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of marble and travertine were exported in Eastern Europe; with an increase of 8.7% on 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the crude exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine crude exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 181% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia represented the key exporter of marble and travertine in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), committing a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belarus (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - each reached a 3.9% share of total exports.
Exports from Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -21.4% from 2012 to 2022. Bulgaria (-7.5%), Belarus (-21.5%) and Romania (-32.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bulgaria (+15 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Romania and Russia saw its share reduced by -6.7% and -9.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) emerged as the largest marble and travertine crude supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled -17.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bulgaria (-2.2% per year) and Belarus (-23.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 157%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then plummeted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, imports of marble and travertine in Eastern Europe shrank markedly to X tons, waning by -29% on 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 131%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of crude imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine crude imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 279% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of crude imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Bulgaria was the key importer of marble and travertine in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 43% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together making up a 51% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +9.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest marble and travertine crude importing markets in Eastern Europe were Bulgaria ($X), Romania ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports.
Romania, with a CAGR of +11.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -15.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
