From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia amounted to +2.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (-4.1% per year) and Ukraine (+0.9% per year).

The average currant and gooseberry yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2021, falling by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the yield showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 8.1%. Over the period under review, the currant and gooseberry yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The currant and gooseberry harvested area reduced slightly to X ha in 2021, almost unchanged from 2020 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of currants and gooseberries increased by 43% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 48%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland was the major exporter of currants and gooseberries in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Latvia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.4% share of total exports.

Exports from Poland decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+55.7%), Latvia (+40.2%) and Bulgaria (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +55.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belarus (+13 p.p.), Latvia (+1.9 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-6.8 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 5% share.

In Poland, currant and gooseberry exports declined by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+46.3% per year) and the Czech Republic (-11.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, currant and gooseberry export price increased by +62.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 53%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, imports of currants and gooseberries in Eastern Europe dropped to X tons, shrinking by -10.8% on 2020. In general, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 319%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons), distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) represented the major importers of currants and gooseberries, together generating 92% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
