In 2021, the East European calendering cylinder market increased by 3.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. In value terms, calendering cylinder exports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. In 2021, the Czech Republic (X units) was the key exporter of cylinders for calendering, committing 57% of total exports. Slovakia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X units) and Poland (X units). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total exports. Ukraine (X units), Bulgaria (X units) and Belarus (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cylinders for calendering. At the same time, Slovakia (+12.9%) and Russia (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012-2021. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-4.6%), Ukraine (-23.5%) and Bulgaria (-31.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Czech Republic (+31 p.p.), Slovakia (+11 p.p.), Russia (+6.8 p.p.) and Poland (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ukraine (-17.7 p.p.) and Bulgaria (-37.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 71% of total exports.

Russia, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, waning by -10% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, calendering cylinder export price decreased by -27.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cylinders for calendering increased by 17% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, calendering cylinder imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 57%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Slovakia represented the largest importer of cylinders for calendering in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X units) and Ukraine (X units). All these countries together took near 46% share of total imports. The following importers - Poland (X units) and the Czech Republic (X units) - each recorded a 7.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +49.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X), Russia ($X) and Ukraine ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 82% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +53.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Romania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
