After four years of growth, the East European degras market decreased by -22.5% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption showed a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented roughly 80% of total exports in 2021. Poland (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Bulgaria (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +34.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the largest degras supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 4% share.

In Romania, degras exports increased at an average annual rate of +53.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-8.1% per year) and Bulgaria (+10.5% per year).

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 30% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a buoyant increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+14.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of degras decreased by -3% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ukraine was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 59% of total imports. Hungary (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Russia (9.9%), Poland (8.1%) and Romania (4.9%). Belarus (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Ukraine decreased at an average annual rate of -15.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Romania (+49.5%), Belarus (+40.5%), Hungary (+33.2%) and Russia (+22.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +49.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Poland (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Hungary (+16 p.p.), Russia (+9.5 p.p.), Romania (+4.8 p.p.), Poland (+4.1 p.p.) and Belarus (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ukraine (-26.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest degras importing markets in Eastern Europe were Hungary ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +41.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 165% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a prominent expansion. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
