Modified Starches Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European modified starches market rose to $X in 2022, growing by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, modified starches exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +78.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Lithuania (X tons), distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the major exporters of dextrins and other modified starches, together making up 93% of total exports. Romania (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +66.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 47% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, modified starches export price increased by +70.3% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 10%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, modified starches imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the key importers of dextrins and other modified starches in 2022, accounting for near 33% and 30% of total imports, respectively. The Czech Republic (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Slovakia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons). All these countries together held near 21% share of total imports.
