Diesel-electric locomotive exports declined to X units in 2021, reducing by -6.4% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, diesel-electric locomotive exports fell modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia (X units) and Ukraine (X units) were the largest exporters of diesel-electric locomotives in 2021, resulting at approx. 57% and 2.3% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Estonia (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Latvia (X units) and Russia (X units), together committing an 89% share of total exports. The following exporters - Poland (X units), Bulgaria (X units) and Slovakia (X units) - together made up 6.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to diesel-electric locomotives exports from Russia and Ukraine stood at +10.7% and -36.4%, respectively. At the same time, Estonia (+100.0%), the Czech Republic (+27.7%), Russia (+10.7%), Poland (+8.0%) and Latvia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Latvia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 91% share of total exports. Estonia, Ukraine, Slovakia, Lithuania, Poland and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.7%.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +35.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 2.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 48%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of diesel-electric locomotives decreased by -40.2% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, diesel-electric locomotive imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 126%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, the largest diesel-electric locomotive importing markets in Eastern Europe were Lithuania ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +35.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
