Diethanolamine Market Size in Eastern Europe

After three years of decline, the East European diethanolamine market increased by 19% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Diethanolamine Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, diethanolamine production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

After four years of growth, overseas shipments of diethanolamine and its salts decreased by -19.3% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 143%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, diethanolamine exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 91%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), creating a 9.2% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Poland (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest diethanolamine supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -1.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 29% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-0.8%).

Imports in Eastern Europe

For the third consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in supplies from abroad of diethanolamine and its salts, which increased by 8.7% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, diethanolamine imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Poland represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together constituting a 51% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of diethanolamine and its salts. At the same time, Belarus (+34.5%), the Czech Republic (+22.5%), Hungary (+11.3%), Russia (+5.6%) and Romania (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ukraine (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary and Belarus increased by +15, +4.8, +4.1 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest diethanolamine importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Romania ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 72% of total imports. Hungary, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
