Toy Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European toy market expanded markedly to $X in 2021, increasing by 7.8% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, toy exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +97.9% against 2012 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tons) was the key exporter of dolls and toys, committing 42% of total exports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Hungary (14%) and Belarus (5.4%). The following exporters - Slovakia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - each resulted at a 9.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest toy supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 10% share.

In the Czech Republic, toy exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+24.0% per year) and Hungary (+7.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 73% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the third consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in purchases abroad of dolls and toys, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +21.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toy imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +7.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) was the largest importer of dolls and toys in Eastern Europe, creating 66% of total import. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together generating a 22% share of total imports. Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest toy importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together accounting for 72% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +14.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 7.1%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
