Dried Onion Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the East European dried onion market, when its value decreased by -23.6% to $X. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +29.6% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In 2021, exports of dried onions in Eastern Europe soared to X tons, with an increase of 37% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried onion exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Hungary (X tons) was the main exporter of dried onions, achieving 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Latvia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together generating a 35% share of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Hungary was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried onions exports, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bulgaria (+7.6%), Latvia (+5.6%) and Russia (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Estonia (-3.0%) and Poland (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Hungary, Latvia, Russia, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria increased by +46, +5.8, +4.6, +4.2 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the largest dried onion supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 6.3% share.

In Hungary, dried onion exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-5.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+1.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 159% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+27.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of dried onions imported in Eastern Europe expanded notably to X tons, picking up by 6.2% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried onion imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 20%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) represented the main importer of dried onions in Eastern Europe, constituting 70% of total import. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.6% share, followed by Ukraine (5.3%). The following importers - Estonia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - each finished at a 7.5% share of total imports.

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
