The East European dry vegetable market dropped to $X in 2022, shrinking by -13.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, dry vegetable production declined remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 287%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of dry vegetables were exported in Eastern Europe; with an increase of 17% on 2021. In general, exports saw a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 73%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry vegetable exports rose to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +112.3% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 23%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the major exporter of dry vegetables in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 73% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), generating a 15% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dry vegetable exports from Poland stood at +5.5%. At the same time, Latvia (+15.6%), Russia (+15.6%) and Hungary (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Hungary (+5.9 p.p.), Poland (+5.2 p.p.) and Latvia (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest dry vegetable supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 3.6% share.

In Poland, dry vegetable exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+8.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (+0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -12% against the previous year. Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, imports of dry vegetables in Eastern Europe stood at X tons, increasing by 4.9% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, dry vegetable imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of dry vegetables, namely Russia, Poland, Hungary and Romania, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), achieving a 5.6% share of total imports. Slovakia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +12.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Hungary ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 69% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +9.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
