Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of durum wheat production, accounting for 51% of total volume. Moreover, durum wheat production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ukraine (X tons), threefold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Russia totaled +7.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Ukraine (+6.1% per year) and Poland (+3.6% per year).
The average durum wheat yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, almost unchanged from the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 19%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of durum wheat were harvested in Eastern Europe; leveling off at the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 9.4%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to durum wheat production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, overseas shipments of durum wheat increased by 48% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 61%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, durum wheat exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a noticeable expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together comprising a 19% share of total exports. Ukraine (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +45.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Slovakia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Romania, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
Belarus, with a CAGR of +35.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of durum wheat were imported in Eastern Europe; picking up by 9.3% against the year before. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -25.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the main importers of durum wheat in 2022, recording near 37% and 31% of total imports, respectively. Hungary (X tons) took an 8.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (7.3%), Latvia (5.6%) and Romania (5.4%). Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +49.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 75% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +49.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat import price increased by +97.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
