The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The Czech Republic represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 30% of total exports. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Romania (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.3% share, followed by Russia (12%), Bulgaria (5.8%), Poland (13%), the Czech Republic (15%), Hungary (32%) and Slovakia (4.5%). Ukraine (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

While the share of Hungary (+19 p.p.), Bulgaria (+4.1 p.p.) and Poland (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Slovakia (-3.7 p.p.), Russia (-7.7 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-15.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 57% of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 37%.

Among the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +8.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
