In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the East European expanded clays market, when its value increased by 18% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, expanded clays exports amounted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tons) was the key exporter of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag, comprising 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together generating a 44% share of total exports. Ukraine (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to expanded clays exports from the Czech Republic stood at +7.3%. At the same time, Lithuania (+49.8%) and Poland (+28.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +49.8% from 2012-2021. Ukraine experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-1.7%) and Belarus (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Czech Republic (+16 p.p.), Poland (+15 p.p.) and Lithuania (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia and Belarus saw its share reduced by -4.6% and -28.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest expanded clays supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 13% share.
In the Czech Republic, expanded clays exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-0.8% per year) and Poland (+3.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -11.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
Expanded clays imports amounted to X tons in 2021, growing by 11% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, expanded clays imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -4.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 54%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Estonia (X tons), distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the major importers of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag, together constituting 85% of total imports. Poland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in Eastern Europe, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 9.4% share.
In the Czech Republic, expanded clays imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+8.9% per year) and Poland (+6.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 18%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
