Fiberboard Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European fiberboard market contracted to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fiberboard production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 8.7%. After ten years of growth, shipments abroad of fiber board of wood or other ligneous materials decreased by -16.6% to X cubic meters in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, fiberboard exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters) and Belarus (X cubic meters) was the main exporter of fiber board of wood or other ligneous materials in Eastern Europe, creating 72% of total export. It was distantly followed by Romania (X cubic meters) and Hungary (X cubic meters), together creating an 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - Bulgaria (X cubic meters) and Ukraine (X cubic meters) - together made up 4.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +21.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest fiberboard supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 73% share of total exports.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +28.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 29%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per cubic meter), while Russia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After six years of growth, supplies from abroad of fiber board of wood or other ligneous materials decreased by -27.3% to X cubic meters in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, fiberboard imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.2% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 36%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

In 2022, Russia (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Poland (X cubic meters), Romania (X cubic meters), Lithuania (X cubic meters), Slovakia (X cubic meters), Hungary (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), Ukraine (X cubic meters) and Bulgaria (X cubic meters) were the largest importers of fiber board of wood or other ligneous materials, together making up 90% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Romania ($X) and Lithuania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 42% share of total imports. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 23%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per cubic meter), while Russia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
