Fireclay Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European fireclay market amounted to $X in 2021, flattening at the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, fireclay exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of fireclay, namely Ukraine, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Ukraine was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fireclay exports, with a CAGR of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) also remains the largest fireclay supplier in Eastern Europe.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 10%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Ukraine.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of fireclay increased by 20% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fireclay imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 60% of total imports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Belarus (8.9%). The following importers - Bulgaria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of fireclay. At the same time, Bulgaria (+6.5%), Poland (+6.1%) and Hungary (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belarus (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland and Bulgaria increased by +8.7 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Belarus ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 91% share of total imports. Bulgaria and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.8%.

Among the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +6.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
