Fish Parts Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European fish parts market expanded markedly to $X in 2022, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Fish Parts Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, fish parts production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +2.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, approx. X tons of fish heads, tails and maws were exported in Eastern Europe; which is down by -9.5% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 155%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, fish parts exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 71%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Belarus represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 65% of total exports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Lithuania (11%) and Russia (5.6%). Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fish heads, tails and maws exports, with a CAGR of +183.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+172.4%), Lithuania (+15.4%), Poland (+10.7%) and Russia (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus and Bulgaria increased by +65 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest fish parts supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus totaled +146.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (-9.6% per year) and Lithuania (+14.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (-1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Fish Parts Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of fish heads, tails and maws decreased by -16.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 251% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, fish parts imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 235%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Latvia (X tons), generating a 6.4% share of total imports. Estonia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +19.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Estonia (+51.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +51.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Latvia (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+53 p.p.) and Estonia (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Latvia (-41.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fish heads, tails and maws in Eastern Europe, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Latvia ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +8.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Latvia (-8.3% per year) and Estonia (+33.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
