Market Size for Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine in Eastern Europe
In 2021, the East European market for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 0.4% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Exports of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine
Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, approx. X tons of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines were exported in Eastern Europe; increasing by 9.3% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 15%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the largest exporters of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines in 2021, accounting for approx. 37% and 35% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together comprising a 24% share of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 66% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +15.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 39%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine
Imports in Eastern Europe
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 26% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 49%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Hungary (X tons) represented the largest importer of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines, mixing up 61% of total imports. Slovakia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by the Czech Republic (6.7%), Ukraine (6.4%) and Bulgaria (6%). The following importers - Romania (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) - each resulted at a 4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports into Hungary stood at -3.5%. At the same time, Romania (+17.7%) and Ukraine (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +17.7% from 2012-2021. Bulgaria, Latvia and Slovakia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania increased by +12, +4.6, +4, +2.7 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Hungary ($X), Ukraine ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 37% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Latvia, which together accounted for a further 14%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +22.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
