Leather Footwear Market Size in Eastern Europe
In 2021, the East European leather footwear market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a slight slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear production plummeted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2.6%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, exports of leather footwear in Eastern Europe was estimated at X tons, growing by 2.4% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 6.5% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, leather footwear exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Poland represented the major exporter of leather footwear in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 38% of total exports in 2021. Slovakia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together held near 51% share of total exports. Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+15.0%), Belarus (+12.4%) and the Czech Republic (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hungary (-3.5%), Slovakia (-6.2%) and Romania (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+27 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+3.8 p.p.), Belarus (+3.7 p.p.) and Russia (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Slovakia (-6.7 p.p.) and Romania (-21.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest leather footwear supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with an 11% share.
In Poland, leather footwear exports increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Slovakia (-5.0% per year) and the Czech Republic (+3.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per kg in 2021, with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per kg), while Belarus ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, leather footwear imports in Eastern Europe expanded markedly to X tons, picking up by 11% on 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, leather footwear imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 26%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ukraine (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together generating a 30% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 72% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +13.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per kg, picking up by 3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 15%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per kg), while Ukraine ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
