For the fourth consecutive year, the East European frozen fish meat market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.3% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, frozen fish meat production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -1.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the amount of frozen fish meat exported in Eastern Europe skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 49% against 2020 figures. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +81.6% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, frozen fish meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +83.3% against 2017 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia was the key exporter of frozen fish meat in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 53% of total exports in 2021. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Lithuania (19%). Latvia (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen fish meat exports, with a CAGR of +10.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lithuania (+10.2%), Estonia (+3.7%), Poland (+3.5%) and Latvia (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Lithuania increased by +11 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Lithuania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 94% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +11.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas purchases of frozen fish meat increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 20%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen fish meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the main importers of frozen fish meat in 2021, resulting at near 26% and 25% of total imports, respectively. Lithuania (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Ukraine (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together took near 41% share of total imports. Estonia (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +14.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen fish meat importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Lithuania ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia and Latvia, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +13.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 8.1%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Lithuania ($X per ton) and Belarus ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) and Latvia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
