Fructose Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European fructose market reduced sharply to $X in 2021, dropping by -23.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the market value increased by 9.5%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of fructose and fructose syrup increased by 40% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +57.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fructose exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +82.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Hungary was the key exporter of fructose and fructose syrup in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 46% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together creating a 45% share of total exports. Russia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fructose exports from Hungary stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Ukraine (+123.1%), Russia (+47.8%), Slovakia (+10.5%), the Czech Republic (+7.0%), Bulgaria (+4.2%) and Poland (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +123.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Ukraine (+4.6 p.p.), Russia (+3.5 p.p.) and Slovakia (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-2.2 p.p.), Hungary (-3.5 p.p.) and Bulgaria (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest fructose supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Hungary ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), together accounting for 68% of total exports. Poland, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Among the main exporting countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +85.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 9.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the amount of fructose and fructose syrup imported in Eastern Europe amounted to X tons, rising by 7.4% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 18%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fructose imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 11%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of fructose and fructose syrup, namely Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), together committing a 22% share of total imports. Lithuania (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +14.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest fructose importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 61% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +8.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
