Garlic Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European garlic market stood at $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 9.7%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Romania (X tons), with a combined 87% share of total production. Belarus, Poland and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +3.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average garlic yield in Eastern Europe declined to X tons per ha, which is down by -1.5% on 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 7%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the garlic harvested area in Eastern Europe expanded slightly to X ha, picking up by 1.9% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of garlic decreased by -12.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 45%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented the main exporters of garlic, together mixing up 88% of total exports. Slovakia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +35.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest garlic supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 65% share of total exports. Latvia, Russia, Slovakia and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +29.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -12.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 44%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of garlic were imported in Eastern Europe; surging by 12% against 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 52%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 56% of total imports. Poland (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ukraine (7.1%), the Czech Republic (7%) and Romania (5.4%). The following importers - Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to garlic imports into Russia stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Poland (+11.7%), Romania (+9.7%) and Hungary (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +11.7% from 2012-2022. Ukraine and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Slovakia (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+8.2 p.p.) and Romania (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine and the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -3.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported garlic in Eastern Europe, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 10% share.

In Russia, garlic imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+11.0% per year) and the Czech Republic (-0.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -11.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 53% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
