Ginger Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the East European ginger market decreased by -4.4% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -21.8% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 107,142,400%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Lithuania (X tons) remains the largest ginger producing country in Eastern Europe, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Lithuania amounted to -1.0%.

Ginger Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of ginger decreased by -2.9% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 161% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the major exporters of ginger in 2022, reaching near 36% and 34% of total exports, respectively. The Czech Republic (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Hungary (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 21% share of total exports. The following exporters - Latvia (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - each finished at a 7.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +122.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ginger supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Belarus ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 63% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +106.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -24.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 77% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ginger Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the amount of ginger imported in Eastern Europe stood at X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -13.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ginger imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the main importer of ginger in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 45% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Belarus (8.5%), the Czech Republic (7.6%) and Ukraine (4.8%). Hungary (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ginger imports into Russia stood at +10.1%. At the same time, Belarus (+31.6%), Bulgaria (+27.7%), Hungary (+26.2%), Poland (+12.4%), Ukraine (+2.9%) and the Czech Republic (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +31.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Russia (+8.3 p.p.), Belarus (+7.4 p.p.), Poland (+6.5 p.p.), Hungary (+3.1 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ukraine (-2.9 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Belarus, Hungary, Ukraine and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +27.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -13.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 19%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
