Goat Meat Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European goat meat market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a mild curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Goat Meat Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, goat meat production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) remains the largest goat meat producing country in Eastern Europe, comprising approx. 61% of total volume. Moreover, goat meat production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ukraine (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Romania (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Ukraine (-3.5% per year) and Romania (-6.5% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of goat meat in Eastern Europe reduced slightly to X kg per head, remaining stable against the year before. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 6.7%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per head. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the goat meat yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The global number of animals slaughtered for goat meat production reached X heads in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the number of producing animals, however, showed a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by 5.1% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, the amount of goat meat exported in Eastern Europe declined to X tons, shrinking by -6% against 2021. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, goat meat exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Romania (X tons) was the major exporter of goat meat, generating 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), together constituting a 42% share of total exports. Poland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Romania increased at an average annual rate of +27.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ukraine (+240.4%) and Poland (+20.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +240.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bulgaria (-1.6%) and Moldova (-15.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Romania, Ukraine and Poland increased by +51, +13 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the largest goat meat supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Ukraine, with an 11% share.

In Romania, goat meat exports increased at an average annual rate of +28.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Moldova (-16.5% per year) and Ukraine (+234.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of goat meat increased by 483% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a modest increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, goat meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 241% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Romania dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 92% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), creating a 5.8% share of total imports. Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Romania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the goat meat imports, with a CAGR of +141.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+27.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Poland (-29.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Romania (+92 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Poland saw its share reduced by -88.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Romania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported goat meat in Eastern Europe, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bulgaria ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Romania amounted to +112.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+26.2% per year) and Poland (-29.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -49.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
