Gold Market Size in Eastern Europe
The East European gold market shrank sharply to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -18.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Gold Production in Eastern Europe
In value terms, gold production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +71.2% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of gold, when their volume decreased by -6.6% to X tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 255% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, gold exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 383%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) represented roughly 96% of total exports in 2021.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gold exports, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia increased by +43 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest gold supplier in Eastern Europe.
In Russia, gold exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per kg in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per kg in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Russia amounted to +0.6% per year.
Gold Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2021, overseas purchases of gold increased by 56% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gold imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Estonia (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 42% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest gold importing markets in Eastern Europe were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports.
Belarus, with a CAGR of +18.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per kg, remaining stable against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, gold import price increased by +118.0% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per kg), while Slovakia ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+23.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
