After two years of decline, the East European grape must market increased by 0.7% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per litre, surging by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per litre), while Hungary amounted to $X per litre.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (-1.0%).

In 2021, approx. X litres of grape must were imported in Eastern Europe; which is down by -12.4% against 2020. In general, imports recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports into Slovakia increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+23.2%), Poland (+14.6%) and Romania (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hungary (-19.3%) and Russia (-21.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Slovakia (+34 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+14 p.p.), Romania (+5.5 p.p.) and Poland (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Hungary (-7.7 p.p.) and Russia (-47.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest grape must importing markets in Eastern Europe were Slovakia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 75% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +22.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per litre, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per litre), while Slovakia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
