For the ninth consecutive year, the East European grapefruit juice (single strength) market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -27.6% to $X in 2021. Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Slovakia (+47.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +47.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Russia (-4.5%), Hungary (-7.2%), Belarus (-10.6%) and the Czech Republic (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+28 p.p.) and Slovakia (+9.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Hungary (-2.8 p.p.), Belarus (-3.5 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest grapefruit juice (single strength) supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +56.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Hungary, with a CAGR of +25.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 31%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
