Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of grapefruits decreased by -5.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grapefruit exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 51%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Latvia (X tons), together making up a 36% share of total exports. Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Bulgaria increased at an average annual rate of +29.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+41.2%), Hungary (+18.6%) and Latvia (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +41.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-6.0%), Poland (-7.9%) and Lithuania (-18.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bulgaria, Russia, Hungary and Latvia increased by +54, +7.1, +2.7 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Bulgaria ($X) remains the largest grapefruit supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with an 8.9% share.

In Bulgaria, grapefruit exports expanded at an average annual rate of +30.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-5.5% per year) and Lithuania (-16.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

For the fourth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded decline in purchases abroad of grapefruits, which decreased by -7.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grapefruit imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 37% of total imports. Poland (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (12%), Bulgaria (8.6%) and Ukraine (8.5%). The following importers - Belarus (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each accounted for an 8.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to grapefruit imports into Russia stood at -4.1%. At the same time, Belarus (+8.0%) and Bulgaria (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +8.0% from 2012-2022. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Romania (-1.1%), Ukraine (-3.1%) and the Czech Republic (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bulgaria, Belarus and Poland increased by +5, +2.8 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 64% of total imports. Ukraine, Bulgaria, Belarus and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +9.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 15%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
