The East European graphite market soared to $X in 2021, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed tangible growth. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Graphite Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, graphite production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the amount of graphite (natural) exported in Eastern Europe fell to X tons, with a decrease of -14.6% against the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +22.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 60%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 52% of total exports. Ukraine (X tons) took a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (18%). Hungary (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to graphite exports from Russia stood at +11.1%. At the same time, Hungary (+37.3%) and Ukraine (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +37.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+26 p.p.), Ukraine (+4.5 p.p.) and Hungary (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the Czech Republic (-20.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Russia ($X) and Hungary ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 78% of total exports.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +24.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 53%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the amount of graphite (natural) imported in Eastern Europe skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 24% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 102%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphite imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) represented the main importer of graphite (natural), generating 51% of total imports. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Hungary (11%), the Czech Republic (8.6%) and Slovakia (8.5%). Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+52.2%) and Slovakia (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +52.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-11.0%), Russia (-11.1%) and Ukraine (-22.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+38 p.p.), Hungary (+11 p.p.) and Slovakia (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Czech Republic (-5.7 p.p.), Russia (-10.7 p.p.) and Ukraine (-15.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest graphite importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Hungary ($X) and Russia ($X), together comprising 89% of total imports.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +59.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
