After two years of growth, the East European non-wheat groats market decreased by -4.2% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption saw a pronounced descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 23%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat groats exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +56.4% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 29%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented the largest exporters of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat), together committing 93% of total exports. Lithuania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +15.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest non-wheat groats supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +9.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (+2.4% per year) and Ukraine (-0.7% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, imports of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) in Eastern Europe rose slightly to X tons, picking up by 3.3% against the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat groats imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 28%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Romania (X tons) was the key importer of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat), making up 36% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (9.9%), Russia (9.5%), Moldova (9.1%), Lithuania (7.8%) and Poland (7.8%).

Romania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) imports, with a CAGR of +15.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Moldova (+11.1%), Lithuania (+9.0%) and the Czech Republic (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Poland (-2.4%), Belarus (-9.8%) and Russia (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Romania (+26 p.p.), Moldova (+5.5 p.p.), Lithuania (+4.2 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-2.1 p.p.), Belarus (-15.6 p.p.) and Russia (-23.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Romania ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 60% share of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
