After four years of growth, the East European gypsum, anhydrite and limestone market decreased by -0.2% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, recorded a deep contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 19%. In 2021, overseas shipments of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone decreased by -4.3% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -26.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main exporters of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in Eastern Europe, together resulting at near 65% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Slovakia (11%). Moldova (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 70% of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Latvia, Moldova and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Among the main exporting countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +14.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone increased by 6.5% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -28.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -32.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Ukraine represented the key importer of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by the Czech Republic (19%), Slovakia (5.6%) and Lithuania (5.3%). The following importers - Hungary (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +154.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest gypsum, anhydrite and limestone importing markets in Eastern Europe were Belarus ($X), Ukraine ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +74.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent.
