The East European hair spray market stood at $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, consumption enjoyed a resilient expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hair spray production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 40% against the previous year. In 2022, overseas shipments of hair sprays were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -40.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 43%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hair spray exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Hungary was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together creating a 32% share of total exports. Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Hungary was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hair sprays exports, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012 to 2022. The Czech Republic (-1.3%), Russia (-2.5%), Poland (-4.8%) and Slovakia (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Hungary (+39 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Slovakia (-6.4 p.p.), the Czech Republic (-7.8 p.p.), Russia (-10.1 p.p.) and Poland (-11.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the largest hair spray supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Hungary stood at +10.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+1.0% per year) and Poland (-0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas purchases of hair sprays increased by 3.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hair spray imports expanded to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of hair sprays, namely Poland, the Czech Republic and Russia, represented more than half of total import. Romania (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ukraine (7%), Hungary (6.7%) and Slovakia (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +4.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest hair spray importing markets in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Russia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports. Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +2.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
