The East European hand-made lace market fell significantly to $X in 2022, dropping by -44.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, hand-made lace production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 240%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs decreased by -61.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 5,142% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hand-made lace exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,189%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Hungary was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X kg), mixing up a 12% share of total exports. Poland (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Hungary was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs exports, with a CAGR of +87.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+76.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Poland (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Hungary (+83 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Poland (-31.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest hand-made lace supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Hungary ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 94% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +133.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 365% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+32.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs decreased by -68.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 183%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, hand-made lace imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 111%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belarus represented the largest importer of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 73% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together achieving a 20% share of total imports. Poland (X kg) and Ukraine (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs imports, with a CAGR of +32.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Poland (-2.9%), Russia (-6.7%) and Ukraine (-30.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belarus (+69 p.p.) and Romania (+7.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-9.2 p.p.) and Ukraine (-62.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Romania ($X), Belarus ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 92% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +7.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a deep contraction. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (-3.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
