Handmade Paper Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European handmade paper market reduced to $X in 2021, declining by -1.6% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 37%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

Handmade paper exports reduced remarkably to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -50% compared with the year before. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 277%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handmade paper exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 271% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), constituting a 6.8% share of total exports. Poland (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to handmade paper exports from Bulgaria stood at +60.3%. At the same time, Latvia (+134.0%), Hungary (+27.5%) and Poland (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +134.0% from 2012-2021. Bulgaria (+85 p.p.), Hungary (+6.2 p.p.) and Latvia (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Bulgaria ($X) remains the largest handmade paper supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bulgaria amounted to +34.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+33.5% per year) and Poland (+3.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 85%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas purchases of handmade paper and paperboard decreased by -10.6% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, handmade paper imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 114%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) was the major importer of handmade paper and paperboard, committing 85% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Slovakia (X tons), generating an 11% share of total imports. Bulgaria (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Poland decreased at an average annual rate of -5.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Slovakia (+28.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +28.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Bulgaria (-24.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland and Slovakia increased by +36 and +10 percentage points, respectively.

Import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, handmade paper import price increased by +47.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 76% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
