In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the East European non-electric motor handtools market, when its value decreased by -19.6% to $X. For the third consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of handtools, hydraulic or with a self-contained non-electric motor, which increased by 3.6% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 67%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, non-electric motor handtools exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Poland (X units) and Russia (X units) were the largest exporters of handtools, hydraulic or with a self-contained non-electric motor in 2022, resulting at near 40% and 29% of total exports, respectively. Belarus (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X units). All these countries together held approx. 18% share of total exports. Romania (X units) and Lithuania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +28.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest non-electric motor handtools supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 6.6% share.

In Poland, non-electric motor handtools exports expanded at an average annual rate of +28.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-0.7% per year) and Russia (+8.0% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per unit, rising by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 50%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of handtools, hydraulic or with a self-contained non-electric motor, when their volume decreased by -14.6% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric motor handtools imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +17.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia was the major importing country with an import of around X units, which reached 62% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X units), Ukraine (X units) and Lithuania (X units), together achieving a 34% share of total imports. Belarus (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-electric motor handtools imports into Russia stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Lithuania (+20.0%), Poland (+12.9%), Ukraine (+9.0%) and Belarus (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Poland (+9.8 p.p.), Lithuania (+3.3 p.p.) and Ukraine (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-17.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Ukraine ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 63% of total imports. Lithuania and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.8%.

Lithuania, with a CAGR of +9.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
