Hazelnut Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European hazelnut market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -9.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Hazelnut Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, hazelnut production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Poland (X tons) remains the largest hazelnut producing country in Eastern Europe, comprising approx. 65% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belarus (X tons), fivefold. Romania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8.7% share.

In Poland, hazelnut production increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-0.3% per year) and Romania (+14.5% per year).

The average hazelnut yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2021, which is down by -14.9% on 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the yield increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then reduced in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of hazelnuts were harvested in Eastern Europe; approximately mirroring 2020 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 10%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hazelnut production attained the maximum at X ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports in Eastern Europe

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of hazelnuts decreased by -15.8% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 217%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, hazelnut exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 163%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) represented the major exporter of hazelnuts, making up 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together generating a 20% share of total exports. Belarus (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from Poland stood at +44.2%. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+78.3%), Belarus (+16.9%) and Romania (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +78.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Poland (+61 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+4.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Romania (-27.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) emerged as the largest hazelnut supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +37.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+11.0% per year) and the Czech Republic (+75.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Hazelnut Imports

Imports in Eastern Europe

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -21.6% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 215% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, hazelnut imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 194%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 68% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Romania (X tons), comprising an 8.1% share of total imports. Bulgaria (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +27.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bulgaria (+44.9%), Romania (+11.5%), Belarus (+8.4%), Hungary (+7.7%) and the Czech Republic (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +44.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lithuania (-8.2%), Slovakia (-9.2%) and Poland (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Bulgaria increased by +49 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Eastern Europe, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 5.8% share.

In Russia, hazelnut imports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Romania (+9.1% per year) and Lithuania (-3.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
