In 2021, the East European canned food market decreased by -8.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 8.8%. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. For the seventh consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of canned food, which increased by 4.5% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +63.0% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, canned food exports amounted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +77.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Poland was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 41% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together making up a 44% share of total exports. The following exporters - Slovakia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - each finished at a 6.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +17.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest canned food supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 9.5% share.
In Poland, canned food exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+4.4% per year) and Russia (+11.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of canned food increased by 1.5% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 12%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, canned food imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 16%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X tons), distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main importers of canned food, together mixing up 80% of total imports. The following importers - Bulgaria (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 51% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Latvia and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 46%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
