Hop Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European hop market dropped to $X in 2022, which is down by -8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +16.6% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Hop Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, hop production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hop production, comprising approx. 50% of total volume. Moreover, hop production in the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in the Czech Republic totaled +5.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (+4.3% per year) and Bulgaria (-0.7% per year).

In 2022, the average hop yield in Eastern Europe totaled X tons per ha, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the hop yield hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The hop harvested area stood at X ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 8.5%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hop production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Hop Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

For the fourth consecutive year, Eastern Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of hops, which increased by 4.8% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +53.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, hop exports totaled $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +58.5% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 33%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) was the major exporter of hops, creating 54% of total exports. Poland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 44% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hop exports from the Czech Republic stood at +2.4%. At the same time, Belarus (+29.8%), Poland (+4.0%) and Bulgaria (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +29.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Bulgaria (-2.3 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-7.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest hop supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Czech Republic amounted to +5.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+8.2% per year) and Belarus (+36.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, imports of hops in Eastern Europe dropped to X tons, which is down by -6.7% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hop imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia was the largest importer of hops in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 53% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (13%) and Belarus (4.5%). The following importers - Romania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hop imports into Russia stood at +2.0%. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+14.2%), Slovakia (+8.3%), Poland (+7.4%), Belarus (+3.8%), Lithuania (+3.1%) and Romania (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +14.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Czech Republic (+8 p.p.) and Poland (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ukraine and Russia saw its share reduced by -4.5% and -7.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hops in Eastern Europe, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +7.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+11.4% per year) and the Czech Republic (+21.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
