The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lithuania (+17.2%), Bulgaria (+9.8%), Romania (+7.7%), Slovakia (+7.6%), Latvia (+7.4%), Ukraine (+6.9%), the Czech Republic (+6.7%), Belarus (+4.5%) and Poland (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2021. Romania (+2.4 p.p.) and Lithuania (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Poland and Russia saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -5.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 66% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +14.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
