In 2021, the East European iodine, fluorine and bromine market decreased by -1.1% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 41%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of iodine, fluorine and bromine, when their volume increased by 82% to X tons. In general, exports, however, faced a deep contraction. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 75%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 34% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Ukraine (15%), Bulgaria (14%), Lithuania (11%) and the Czech Republic (7.2%). Poland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to iodine, fluorine and bromine exports from Russia stood at +4.9%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+42.3%), Belarus (+38.7%), Lithuania (+12.9%) and the Czech Republic (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +42.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Poland (-19.4%) and Ukraine (-24.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Lithuania and the Czech Republic increased by +27, +16, +14, +9.5 and +5.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Ukraine ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 61% of total exports. Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +57.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -3.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, iodine, fluorine and bromine export price increased by +76.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the amount of iodine, fluorine and bromine imported in Eastern Europe shrank modestly to X tons, waning by -3.3% on the previous year. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 109%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the largest importer of iodine, fluorine and bromine in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2021. Ukraine (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Belarus (8.9%) and Poland (5.9%). The Czech Republic (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of iodine, fluorine and bromine. At the same time, Belarus (+32.7%) and Ukraine (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +32.7% from 2012-2021. Hungary experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lithuania (-4.1%), the Czech Republic (-10.5%) and Poland (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine increased by +8.3, +3.8 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iodine, fluorine and bromine in Eastern Europe, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.2% share.

In Russia, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ukraine (-14.5% per year) and Poland (-4.7% per year).

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 38%.
